The Kodiak City Council voted at its Thurs., April 14 meeting to approve a $207,000 contract with AIM Maintenance LLC for the installation of four free-standing public toilets.
There are currently no public toilets in Kodiak, and City Manager Mike Tvenge said the new restrooms would be a big improvement.
“Installation of the Portland Loos will provide full public access to outdoor restroom facilities for Kodiak residents and visitors and will mitigate the need to disturb local businesses for their restroom facilities,” he said.
One of the new lavatories will be installed near the Kodiak Harbormaster’s office. Another will be located near the Trident Basin Seaplane Base on Near Island. The contract approved during Thursday’s meeting also stipulates two toilets slated for Pier 2.
The new Portland Loos-style restrooms will be partially paid for with federal COVID-19 relief funds. The Kodiak Island Borough also chipped in $150,000 for the project from its cruise ship head tax.
