KIBSD shuts down schools until January due to COVID

Following a series of days that featured a high count of community spread cases, KIBSD has decided to close down all of its schools through January 11th.

Remote learning will be in effect from the 20th onwards. The district cited several reasons for the closure in an email sent to KIBSD staff and families, including positive cases in schools, instructional instability from frequent opening and closing of schools, and the district’s inability to provide adequate staffing through substitutes.

KIBSD Superintendent Larry LeDoux said that the closures were nothing short of heartbreaking.

“We want our kids to be in school, kids want to be in school with their friends, teachers want them in school. And not to be able to do that is just heartbreaking,” LeDoux said.

“But at some point in time, we have to say, you know, what, if all the things are happening and contributing to this COVID environment, we can’t keep doing what we’re doing in terms of the safety of our staff and students.”

Classes are expected to resume in-person on the Monday of January 11th, 2021.
