Kodiak has seen its second case of COVID-19 this week – and again a close contact of someone, who earlier tested positive for the virus.
On Friday, Kodiak reported a case with close contact transmission. Today’s (Wednesday’s) case brings the total number reported since April to 71.
The Kodiak Emergency Services Organization says six of those are considered active. 20200909 Positive Test Announcement – Case 71
Emergency Services also says the person in this latest case was already under quarantine prior to testing — and will remain in isolation for the duration of the required recovery period.
Health workers will also stay in contact with that person to ensure self-isolation and care.
This cluster of close contact cases, which includes the one on Friday, involve four people, all local residents and all in the same family. Out of the 71 cases reported so far, only 21 are from the Kodiak Island Borough. The source of the infection remains undetermined.
Elsa DeHart, a state public health nurse who tracks these reports, says Kodiak has had family groups before.
“They have all been well quarantined and isolated,” DeHart said. “We’ve also had a handful of cases that had not recently traveled and no discoverable source. We know it’s out there.”
