LOCAL ESC UPDATE: Emergency Operations Center sets up Facebook page for local information on coronavirus, COVID-19

The Kodiak Area Emergency Services Organization has the following press release. KMXT posted as received, with minor editing.

NEWS RELEASE
Kodiak Area Emergency Services Organization
For Immediate Release

March 20, 2020 ESC COVID-19 Update
Kodiak, Alaska

As of March 20, 2020 there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Kodiak

The Emergency Services Council declared a public health disaster emergency on Tuesday, March 18, 2020.

Effective Wednesday, March 19, 2020, the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has been activated to implement precautions for the possible spread of the coronavirus in our community, and to request resources to support the community’s needs.

In an effort to streamline communication with the public, the Kodiak EOC has developed its own Facebook page. Please follow Kodiak Emergency Operations Center on Facebook for current community updates and information.

The Kodiak Airport remains open until the State of Alaska, owner of the facility, announces a closure.

Because there is yet no approved vaccine or medication for this virus, personal hygiene and social distancing are measures that can protect our community:

  • If you are sick, stay home, CALL your medical provider, and follow their instructions.
  • The President’s Coronavirus Guidelines for America recommends avoiding social gatherings in groups of more than 10 people.
  • Social distancing means remaining out of congregate settings, avoiding mass gatherings, and maintaining distance (6 feet) from others when possible.
  • Individuals and families should plan to stay home and plan activities in places where people do not cluster, such as going for a hike.

Questions may be directed to the EOC Joint Information Center at 486-8970.
