The Kodiak High School Lady Bears wrapped up their first visit to the state basketball championship tournament in a generation with a loss this morning to the Dimond Lynx, 51-to-44. Kodiak played the taller Anchorage school tough early. The Bears tied it at 13 early in the second period, just before the Lynx went on a 10 point run to take a commanding lead, that reached as many as 17 points. Dimond remained in control until the 4th, when Kodiak cut the lead to as few as 7 just before the final buzzer.

Emily Horn fouled out with just few seconds left in the fourth and Joanna Garcia spent part of the fourth on the bench with ice on her knee.

As Dan Gensel said on the KVOK broadcast, the Bears spread the scoring around:

Thanks to KVOK for the game audio.

The Kodiak High School Lady Bears played their first game in a state championship tournament in 22 years last night against the Colony Knights. Kodiak's gritty defense kept the top-ranked team in the state to only 41 points, but the Knights clamped down defensively, too, holding the Bears to 22.

With today's game, that ends the basketball season for Kodiak, and the high school careers of the five seniors on the team, Emily Garner, Addie Jones, Betsie McCarty, Rachel Norton and Loretta Timpke.
