Each year, Kodiak holds its annual Spring Cleanup Day, providing the opportunity for the removal and disposal of hazardous household waste and a chance for residents to get out in the community and help collect garbage. This year will be no different.

The event is a collaboration between the borough, the city and the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce. Borough manager Rick Gifford talked about last year's cleanup day and how this year's will be similar at the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly's work session last night. He also said commercial hazardous waste removal has to be arranged with the borough's removal contractor ahead of time.

--          (Spring Cleaning 1                 22 sec.             "There's the community ...  but no commercial waste.")

Borough mayor Jerome Selby said it's important to let people know that the cleanup will be taking place in order to encourage greater participation than in past years.

--          (Spring Cleaning 2                 13 sec.             "Last year they had ...  people would be aware of it.")

Assemblyman Jerrol Friend emphasized the importance of residential hazardous waste removal, and that the annual event provides incentive for people to cleanup their yards.

--          (Spring Cleaning 3                 29 sec.             "Especially now with ...  somewhere else if we don't.")

The Kodiak spring cleanup will take place May 2nd. Participants will meet at the high school for those interested in contributing to the community effort. Hazardous materials can be brought to either the high school parking lot or the landfill for removal. The borough is in the process of hiring a contractor for the off-island removal of the hazardous waste. The time for the event has yet to be announced.
