In what is becoming an annual event for the Parnell administration, a series of “Choose Respect” rallies will be held around the state next week. There will be 140 events across Alaska as part of the governor’s ongoing effort to raise awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault. The governor himself will attend the rally in Palmer at noon on March 28th, and then fly to Old Harbor later that afternoon for a rally at the school and then and march through town.
Meanwhile, Fish and Game Commissioner Cora Campbell will attend the rally here in Kodiak. Rebecca Shields, the executive director of the Kodiak Women’s Resource and Crisis Center, says the Choose Respect March will start at 1 p.m. at the high school. In addition to Campbell, she says mayors Jerome Selby and Pat Branson, and the student bodies from both the middle school and high school will join in. Members of the community are also invited.
More than a dozen other members of the governor’s cabinet are traveling to various communities around the state for rallies. Events are also scheduled in Ouzinkie, Port Lions and Akhiok.
