On Thursday the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly approved the first reading of an ordinance that will rezone the landfill from a combination public use and conservation zone to an industrial zone. Borough Manager Bud Cassidy said the rezone is necessary for upcoming improvements to the landfill.

Duane Dvorak is an associate planner for the borough’s community
development department. Dvorak said the planning and zoning commission
have decided not to rezone the area within a designated green belt at
the landfill.
-- (Borough Rezone 2 :40 “I think that was in deference... things in the future.”)
The assembly approved the first reading of the ordinance, which will
now move to a second reading and public hearing during the next assembly
meeting on February 7.
