The Kodiak High School Bears
basketball teams swept the field in the inaugural Joe T. Classic at Lathrop High School
in Fairbanks
over the weekend.
The Lady Bears won the championship with a 48-36
win over the Bartlett Golden Bears, while the Kodiak boys downed the host
Malemutes 50-49 on a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Austin Frick.
He was later named the tournament's Most Valuable
Player, and Josh Obas joined him on the All-Tournament team. Frick also won the
tournament's three-point shooting contest.
Jerica Nelson had 13 points in the girls
championship game and Hannah Wandersee, who made the All-Tournament team, added
10.
The boys downed the West Valley Wolfpack and the
North Pole Patriots earlier in the tournament, while the Lady Bears defeated
the Malemutes and the Wolfpack on their way to perfect 3-0 records in the
round-robin tournament.
