All that snow and ice out there may look inviting, but Kodiak’s top firefighter says to stay off the ice. In fact, Fire Chief Rome Kamai says no ice is safe in the Kodiak area—ever.
Kamai says people—especially kids—shouldn’t fool themselves into thinking that since the lake is shallow that it’s OK to be on it. Many areas lakes and ponds are stream-fed and less likely to freeze solid:
And often where there are kids there are dogs. If you see a dog on the ice or if your dog scampers out onto the surface, Kamai says it’s best to let the dog take care of itself if it won’t came back to shore:
Of course, if you see a person in the water, call 9-1-1 immediately.
