Moderate Earthquake Shakes Ahkiok |

A number of Kodiak Island residents felt the shake of a moderate
earthquake which struck off Ahkiok late Monday afternoon. The Alaska Tsunami
Warning Center
reports that the quake occurred at 5:45 p.m. Monday and was located 90
southwest of the city of Kodiak.
Paul Whitmore, the
center’s director, said this (Tuesday) afternoon that the initial magnitude of
the quake was put at five-point-two (5.2) but has since been upgraded by the
USGS to five-point-five (5.5).
The quake
originated 30 miles beneath Alitak
Bay, off the village of Ahkiok.
It was followed by several much smaller aftershocks.
No watch or
warnings were issued following Monday’s quake.
