This week the Alaska Marine Highway System released a draft of the state ferry schedule for next summer. There aren't a lot of changes for the Kodiak run, with service by the Tustumena three weeks a month between here and Homer. The Kennicott will cover the other week when the Tusty goes down the Alaska Peninsula and back.

Captain Mike Neussl is the deputy commissioner of transportation in charge of the ferry system. He says his staff tries not to shake things up too much when they come out with a new schedule.

-- (Ferry 1                   22 sec              "Our goal is to maintain a ... that correction or change.")

In that light, Neussl says there are no major changes in store for service to or from Kodiak - except for the two the ferry system instituted this summer:

-- (Ferry 2                   27 sec              "Other than the addition of ... changes, I don't think, in Southwest.")

However, if you look at the schedule graph, you will see Ouzinkie listed, but not Old Harbor. Neussl says that's just a shortcoming of the way the graph is made.

-- (Ferry 3                   24 sec              "The frequency of service to ... doing the same thing next year.")

Neussl says he and the Marine Highway office welcome public feedback on the schedule, but there are only a couple more weeks to make comments:

-- (Ferry 4                   14 sec              "The comment period closes on ... on Tuesday the 28th.")

Just a reminder: the Tustumena will be out of service for nearly six months this winter, undergoing improvements and overhaul, starting November 1st. The Kennicott will pick up the slack with twice-weekly visits to Kodiak.
