The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly approved a one-year contract extension with Alaska Waste to collect garbage on the road system. Borough Manager Rick Gifford said the current contract had one- and two-year contract extensions, with incentives for the longer term:

--          (Waste 1                      37 sec                          “… solid waste management plan more efficient.”)

The new solid waste management plan is being prepared by Bell and Associates of Anchorage. Gifford said the plan should be in the hands of the assembly and the solid waste advisory board later this month:

--          (Waste 2                      49 sec                          “… July 1 deadline for next year.”)

Assemblyman Tom Abell urged the assembly to go for a two-year contract and its associated savings, but that amendment failed on a 2-to-5 vote, with only he and Louise Stutes voting in favor. He then moved to postpone a vote on the contract until the June 5th regular meeting, but it too failed along those same lines.

The final vote awarding the contract passed 6-to-1, with Stutes the only dissenting vote.
