The Alaska Marine Highway System announced late last week that the ferry Kennicott will be diverted from its usual route for 10 days in July to replace the ailing ferry Columbia on its run to and from Bellingham, Washington.

The Columbia needs to go out of service for repairs to its number one generator. As a result, the Kennicott will be canceling its July 5th trip to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, and take up the Bellingham run from July 6th through 16th.

The change will not affect the Kennicott’s one-week-a-month service on the Kodiak to Homer run. It will leave Homer on June 30 for Southeast to ply the Bellingham route, and then return across the gulf to Kodiak as scheduled on July 25th.

The Columbia is scheduled to return to service on July 16th, when it will depart Ketchikan for Bellingham.
