An EXTRA Talk of Alaska this week
It's getting closer and closer and schedules are getting tighter and tighter so this week the folks at APRN are adding an additional episode of Talk of Alaska so we can all be a little bit more knowledgeable when it's time to fill in the dots. The Governor makes his appearance Tuesday morning and the challenger, Bill Walker, makes his appearance Wednesday morning. Both live at 10am Tuesday and Wednesday this week (and both being repeated the same evening at 9pm on HD3)

Early Pledge Drive

tbt_banner.jpg

It's that time of year when we ask for your support to help us continue to bring you the bits of radio that help you stay an informed citizen (like the debates and election updates), an entertained listener (did you hear This American Life's new spinoff, called Serial?), and apprised of community events (the community calendar is always full this time of year).

Not only will you be supporting all of that goodness, but you'll also be entered into a drawing for a set of cross country skis OR a snowboard from Orion's Mountain Sports if you pledge by midnight on October 29! If you're a new member, you'll be entered into a special drawing for a photography package from Simply Lovette Photograpy -- just in time for the holidays.

Lots of great stuff this Fall for our pledge drive, including an entire day of retro radio on October 30 (and great food). Stop by, tune in, and pledge right here via the Donate Now button or by calling 486-3181. Thanks!

On Saturday, KMXT will present live in concert Toubab Krewe at the Fairgrounds, along with special guests, the Kodiak Island Drummers.

Toubab Krewe is a five-member band from North Carolina that fuses West African rhythms with American musical styles. Afro-Pop World Wide’s tongue-in-cheek description of their genre is “Afro-Cowboy-Ninja-Surf” music.

Jay Barrett spoke with one of the band’s percussionists, Luke Quaranta, right after they arrived in Homer for their Wednesday night show.

The gates open for the Toubab Krewe concert at the Kodiak State Fairgrounds at 5 o’clock on Saturday. Tickets are available here at the KMXT studio, at the Treasury and Treasury Home stores downtown, and from any member of the Kodiak Island Drummers.

There will be free shuttle buses running from the high school and the Harbormaster’s Office around 5 and 6 p.m., and will return a little after 10.

The Toubab Krewe concert is a production of KMXT.

There is a business in Kodiak that has a unique method to prepare hunters’ big game trophies. The company, which has 50-thousand workers, would be the island’s largest employer by far, if the owner actually paid them. Mary Donaldson has more.

The State of Alaska has come to a financial settlement with the former owners of the fishing vessel Nordic Viking. Almost a year ago the 130-foot boat ran aground off of Port Gravina in Prince William Sound, spilling 35-hundred gallons of diesel fuel. A Kodiak man, Dale Pruitt, was the skipper at the time of the grounding.

Constantly, tons of garbage floating in ocean waters washes onshore on beaches worldwide. In Alaska, the trash fouls beaches and interferes with wildlife habitats. A local nonprofit was formed a few years ago that deals with these issues in Kodiak. Mary Donaldson has this report.
