Valentine's for KWRCC
be-my-valentine.jpg

When you go shopping this week you can help the women and children at the Kodiak Women's Resource & Crisis Center. KWRCC has a long wish list of items that would help their families in crisis. You can help by purchasing one or more of the items and dropping them off at KMXT, 620 Egan Way by 5pm on Friday - we'll make sure everything gets to the KWRCC for Valentine's Day. Find a copy of the list here:  kwrcc_wish_list_jan_2016

The Kodiak High School Bears football team got back on the winning track in this young season with a commanding win against Thunder Mountain of Juneau, a first-year program. Kodiak jumped out early and rarely stumbled as they defeated the Falcons 48-to-20.

The Bears spread the scoring around, with three different players scoring rushing touchdowns in the first period alone. But Rafael Matautia and Riley McFarlin scored twice each to account for half of Kodiak's scoring.

The Bears were leading 28-to-zero in the second period when Zack Watkins was tackled in the end zone for a safety to get the Falcons on the scoreboard. Then on the ensuing possession, Thunder Mountain reached the end zone, and after another Kodiak score, did it again on a 31-yard pass play, bringing the score to 35-to-14 to end the half.

The Bears also dominated the second half, though were stopped short on a couple of drives and were forced to attempt filed goals that failed.

The Bears improve their record to 2-and-1, and will start five straight games of Northern Lights Conference play next Saturday, when they host the always-tough Skyview Panthers. Thunder Mountain falls to 0-and-2.

When the Alaska State Department of Education released the AYP testing results recently, most of the news was good for the Kodiak Island School District. Every Kodiak elementary school met the standards set for AYP or Annual Yearly Progress.

Even though the percentage of Kodiak schools meeting the standards was high, the two schools that did not make AYP tend to stand out. That's because the two that didn't make AYP are Kodiak High School and Kodiak Middle School.
