12 Days of Giving

12_dog_image.jpgTis the season when communities band together and support those in need. This year, that includes your public radio station. December 12 - 24, make a special holiday contribution to KMXT and you'll recieve a special 12 Days of Giving ornament for your tree -- special edition keepsake, friends. We all love those.

We want you to know that we appreciate your generosity at any time of year. But this year, 2014, we've fallen significantly short of our membership goals. And without you, there is no us. So please, don't wait for your neighbors to step up, contribute today by calling 486-3181 or online at kmxt.org.

The Coast Guard is searching for 11 fishermen from the Kodiak-based fishing vessel Katmai after responding to an emergency beacon detected approximately 100 miles west of Adak.

The Coast Guard recieved an EPIRB signal at 1:08 a.m. today. The Coast Guard launched two C-130 long range surveillance aircrafts from Air Station Kodiak as well as an HH-60 Jayhawk. The C-130 also is carrying a relief crew for the helicopter.

The 93-foot Katmai is homeported in Kodiak.

This afternoon the Coast Guard helicopter crew  located an empty survival suit and the EPIRB registered to the Katmai with strobe lights attached floating in the water. They also located a partially deflated life raft along with the two life rafts the Coast Guard C-130 dropped earlier. There was no sign of the Katmai or any crewmember.

The Coast Guard Cutter Acushnet, an Alaska Air National Guard C-130 and a Blackhawk helicopter are also enroute to assist in the search.

The Coast Guard reports north winds at 30 knots, 10-15 foot seas, rain and snow, with visibility of 3 miles.

The public buildings on Borough Hill were locked down for about a half hour Tuesday afternoon after a threatening note was found in the middle school just before 2 p.m.

Kodiak Police Chief T.C. Kamai said police and school officials investigated and found that a male student left the note, which made vague threats towards the school and its occupants. Kamai didn't know exactly what was on the note, but he said it was not a bomb threat.

District Assistant Superintendent Ron Fried said he couldn't release any information about the student, but said that in addition to the middle school, the attached high school, nearby Main Elementary and the district's central offices were all locked down until the threat was resolved.

Chief Kamai said no criminal charges would be filed against the youth, but there could be school administrative punishments in store for him.

Fried said an automated call was placed to the homes of all students in the city to update parents of the situation and to let them know everything was fine. He said the other schools in the district were also alerted, though not necessarily locked down.
