Local Candidate Debate

Kodiak's candidates for local government positions will face off on September 23 at 6pm in the Borough Assembly Chambers. Candidates include those running for the City Council, School Board and Borough Assembly. The event is sponsored by Chamber of Commerce and KMXT and will be broadcast live on KMXT 100.1FM

Palin touted herself as a commercial fisherman, having worked at her family’s setnet site in Bristol Bay. No Contested Races In Borough Elections

            When voters in the Kodiak Island Borough go to the polls five weeks from today they will see a lot of empty spaces on the ballot. The final candidate list was released at 5 o’clock on Friday by the Kodiak Island Borough Clerk’s Office.

            On both the assembly and the school board there are only two people running for three vacancies. There are three service areas with no candidates at all. In fact, the only election with a full slate of candidate won’t even be a race. That’s in the Womens Bay Service Area Board, where three men are running for three vacancies.

Dunbar Breaks Abercrombie Record Against West

            Trevor Dunbar broke the course record at Fort Abercrombie during a dual meet with West Anchorage High School on Saturday. He shaved four full seconds off the 15-minute 24-second record held by a form West runner. Dunbar's 15-20 was nearly a minute faster than second place teammate Sam Salus. Dylan Anthony came in at 16-43 for a sweep of the top three places for the Bears. James Osowski and Justin Blott were sixth and seventh. 

            Kodiak's top girl was Chloe Ivanoff, who ran a 20-16, good for third place. Jaymi Bethea, Amelia Egle and Christy Roe were 7-8-9 for Kodiak, while Katie Strong of Port Lions was sixth in 21-33. 

          The Kodiak boys beat West by 17 points, while West's girls beat Kodiak by 14 points.

KHS Spikers Open Season With Losses On The Road

         The Kodiak High Volleyball team dropped a pair of close conference matches to the Wasilla Warriors this past weekend up on the mainland.

Kodiak Coach Rick Carman says it was disappointing to start the season by dropping two matches, but he felt like the team improved with each game.

Volleyball takes on Kenai this coming weekend in its first home matches of the year.
