            Several carpentry students from village schools are in town this week, working with students from Kodiak High School on an ambitious construction project in the hopes of raising funds for the Ahkiok school.

Local Emergency Managers Prep for Swine Flu

            Although no cases of swine flu have been reported in Alaska thus far, state and local emergency planning groups are mobilizing in preparation for a possible outbreak. 

            A teleconference sponsored by the Alaska Department of Health and Human Services was held Wednesday. Duane Dvorak, associate planner with the Kodiak Island Borough's Community Development Department, took part in the teleconference. He said the state is taking the lead on Alaska's response to a potential swine flu threat, and advising local communities on preparedness. He said that commonly known preventative measures bear repeating until more specific response measures can be determined.

Bob Poe, First Gubernatorial Candidate, Visits Kodiak

            The first declared candidate for next year's gubernatorial election was in Kodiak last week for ComFish. Bob Poe is a Democrat who's worked for four governors, Bill Sheffield, Steve Cowper (cooper), Wally Hickel and Tony Knowles. Poe is probably best known as being responsible for Alaska's year 2000 computer preparations.

            Poe has embraced the high-tech "Web 2.0" strategy of connecting with Alaskans. Besides a web site, he also has a Facebook group, a Flickr photo stream, a YouTube channel, and he regularly issues "tweets" to his Twitter account.

            At Tuesday night's Kodiak Borough Assembly-City Council joint work session, the two governing bodies took up the issue of attracting a University of Alaska Fairbanks research vessel to Kodiak. In a March letter to the City Council, City Mayor Carolyn Floyd and City Manager Linda Freed, Borough Mayor Jerome Selby made a case for home porting UAF's Alaska Region Research Vessel in Kodiak.

            Late spring snowfall and poor field conditions at Baranof Park have already wiped out an opening weekend series for the Kodiak High School varsity baseball team, and resulted in the team being forced to condense its entire 2009 12-game season into just 21 days.
