Planning and Zoning Public Hearing

The Borough Planning and Zoning Commission public hearings on the draft revisions to the land use and zoning regulations will continue on February 4th. The sections of Borough Code in the proposed changes are Title 16 Subdivisions; Title 18 Borough Lands; and Title 17 Zoning.

 

The meeting on February 4th begins at 6:30pm in the Gerald C. Wilson Auditorium. The meeting will be broadcast on KMXT 100.1FM and the public may call in during public comment periods to KMXT at 486-3181. More information, including a side-by-side comparison of the current code and the proposed revisions, and copies of the updated code are available at the Borough Community Development office or online at www.kodiakak.us. If you have any questions about how these regulations may affect your property, please contact staff at 486-9630 or 486-9361.

Cutter Sherman calls on Kodiak

           The Coast Guard Cutter Sherman pulled into Kodiak this week, concluding its 45-day patrol of the Bering Sea. During its most recent mission, the Sherman engaged primarily in red king crab fisheries enforcement, while standing by for search and rescue operations. KMXT's Erik Wander has more.

City Moves to Sell Land

           At last week's meeting the Kodiak City Council took the first steps towards putting three parcels of land into private hands. One lot in town has a buyer lined up, and another person is interested in two lots the city owns in Chiniak. 

            The in-city lot is on Selief Lane, not far from Von Sheele, and is going for 70-thousand dollars. The two lots in Chiniak combined are selling for 50-thousand. The city was given the land in Chiniak by Rachel Rogers in her will several years ago.

Arsonist Strikes Again in Bayside District

           Three fires in three days kept not only the Bayside Volunteer Fire Department busy, but required mutual aid from the island's three other departments.

            Two cars and one home were burned in what may be the latest in a series of arson fires set in the area this year.

            In the early hours of Saturday, a two-alarm fire in a three-story A-frame home at 3669 Monashka Bay Road burned it to the ground, according to Bayside Fire Chief Bob Himes.

Dunbar Wraps XC Season with 2nd in Nationals

          Kodiak's Trevor Dunbar took second place Saturday in the annual Foot Locker high school national championship race at Balboa Park in San Diego, marking the best finish ever by an Alaskan at the national meet. KMXT's Erik Wander has more.
