Waterbound's Greatest Hits

           Waterbound is a fluctuating group of Kodiak musicians who have been writing and recording original songs about Kodiak, the fishing industry, marine conservation and other maritime subjects since 1993.

            The group is set to release its new CD, "An Alaskan Maritime Retrospective," a mix of 15 songs from their first two albums, "Life on the Island" and "Sometimes a Great Ocean," both of which are currently out of print.

            A civilian working for Integrated Support Command in Kodiak has been named United States Coast Guard Engineer of the Year. Laura Kelly, who moved here with her husband Tom in 1999, has been a staff civil engineer for ISC since 2000.

          A representative from Greenpeace is on Kodiak Island to discuss his new initiative. George Pletnikoff, who grew up in the Pribilof Islands, is the Alaska Oceans Campaigner for Greenpeace USA. He's speaking with tribal leaders in Kodiak today, and will fly down to Old Harbor for meetings there over the weekend. 

            The purpose of his visit is to lay the initial groundwork for what he calls "Marine Cultural Heritage Zones."

          The Alaska Division of elections dug into a portion of the outstanding votes in last week's general election on Wednesday. KMXT's Erik Wander reports that while most, but not all, of District 36 was counted, one candidate is confident that he's going to Juneau.

          After years of animosity, which culminated in threats of assault charges between emergency responders, it appears two fire departments have found new common ground. According to Borough Manager Rick Gifford, the city of Kodiak Fire Department is now allowing Bayside Volunteer Fire Department EMTs to ride along on emergency calls in city ambulances.
