Planning and Zoning Public Hearing

The Borough Planning and Zoning Commission public hearings on the draft revisions to the land use and zoning regulations will continue on February 4th. The sections of Borough Code in the proposed changes are Title 16 Subdivisions; Title 18 Borough Lands; and Title 17 Zoning.

 

The meeting on February 4th begins at 6:30pm in the Gerald C. Wilson Auditorium. The meeting will be broadcast on KMXT 100.1FM and the public may call in during public comment periods to KMXT at 486-3181. More information, including a side-by-side comparison of the current code and the proposed revisions, and copies of the updated code are available at the Borough Community Development office or online at www.kodiakak.us. If you have any questions about how these regulations may affect your property, please contact staff at 486-9630 or 486-9361.

          A singer popular with Kodiak country music fans was recently diagnosed with throat cancer, leaving him unable to perform or support his family. One local business owner is organizing a fundraising drive to help him and his family with the financial burdens they face as a result and hopes to organize a benefit concert in the spring.

State Sting Suspends Walmart Cigarette Sales

            The Kodiak Walmart has had its license to sell tobacco suspended for about a month, because it illegally sold tobacco to a minor. As a result, Walmart plans to implement an I.D.-all policy statewide for all tobacco and alcohol sales, and retrain Walmart employees at the Kodiak store.

Lower Fuel Prices Helping School District

            The Kodiak Island Borough School District is benefitting from the recent decline in fuel costs, and it's helping offset the decline in enrollment numbers. The district recently completed its winter budget revision, which was approved at its meeting Monday evening. While the district had budgeted for high fuel costs at the beginning of the year, it is now able continue to fund programs it might otherwise not have been able to.

            Luke Fulp, director of finance for the school district, said that entering the school year, the district was concerned about the uncertainty of then high and rising fuel costs.

Costello on Ivanoff and Roe Championships

            Kodiak girls wrestlers faired well at the Alaska Girls Wrestling State Championships at Chugiak High School over the weekend. Two Kodiak wrestlers won state titles, Chloe Ivanoff and Gloria Roe, and Kodiak took an unprecedentedly high four girls to the tournament. 

            Pat Costello is the Kodiak High School wrestling coach. He said he was proud of the efforts of the four Kodiak wrestlers who took part in the state tournament.
