Planning and Zoning Public Hearing

The Borough Planning and Zoning Commission public hearings on the draft revisions to the land use and zoning regulations will continue on February 4th. The sections of Borough Code in the proposed changes are Title 16 Subdivisions; Title 18 Borough Lands; and Title 17 Zoning.

 

The meeting on February 4th begins at 6:30pm in the Gerald C. Wilson Auditorium. The meeting will be broadcast on KMXT 100.1FM and the public may call in during public comment periods to KMXT at 486-3181. More information, including a side-by-side comparison of the current code and the proposed revisions, and copies of the updated code are available at the Borough Community Development office or online at www.kodiakak.us. If you have any questions about how these regulations may affect your property, please contact staff at 486-9630 or 486-9361.

Wynne Observes Observer Programs Overseas

            A local marine mammal researcher, who spent the past year travelling to countries in Africa and Central America, is set to share the results of her research on marine observer programs in developing nations.

           Kate Wynne will present a talk on her research, "The Globalization of Conservation: A Personal View of NOAA Marine Observer Programs in Developing Nations," Wednesday at the Kodiak Refuge Visitor Center from 7 to 8 p.m. The talk is part of Whale Fest Kodiak 2009 and is sponsored by Friends of the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.

Stevens, 19 Others, Honored by UFA at ComFish Gala

            Some familiar political faces were seen at ComFish Alaska's gala dinner held at the Golden Anchor on the U.S. Coast Guard Base in Kodiak Thursday evening. Former Senator Ted Stevens made an appearance as a special guest at the sold-out event, "Look How Far We've Come," celebrating the 50th anniversary of statehood and the Alaska seafood industry's place in it. Stevens received a lifetime achievement award from United Fisherman of Alaska and was inducted as a charter member of the organization's Seafood Hall of Fame.

            U.S. News and World Report recently ranked the long-term Care Center at Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center as the number one nursing home in Alaska. Meanwhile, the Care Center's administration and staff are hoping to realize their dream of a new facility to replace its current space in the near future.
