$37K Up For Grabs in Kodiak King Derby

            The third annual Kodiak King Salmon Sportfishing Tournament is underway. This year's derby-style tournament features over 30,000 dollars in cash prizes spread across three weight divisions, nine major prizes and 20 mystery weight cash prizes. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Kodiak king salmon enhancement project.

            Tournament administrator Judi Kidder said this year's derby will differ significantly from those of previous years, with more prize money up for grabs and a shift in focus.

            The system that gives Alaska Native corporations an edge in securing governmental contracts is once again under fire in the Lower 48. A provision in the Small Business Administration's rules for small, minority or disadvantaged businesses allows Native corporations to be given unlimited contracts without bidding on them. The provision was created by former Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, and does not extend to other minorities.

Mental Health and Substance Abuse Boards Meet in Kodiak

           The Alaska Mental Health Board and Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse are meeting in Kodiak this week, and all indications are that Kodiak is doing well compared with other communities in the state when it comes to treatment and care for people suffering from mental health or substance abuse issues. However, there's always room for improvement.

            Each year, the Armed Services YMCA invites children of U.S. service members to participate in the national ASYMCA art and essay contests. This year, a local 12th-grader was awarded top honors in the 11th and 12th grade category of the essay contest.

            An offshoot of Barack Obama's grassroots campaign organization is gearing back up in Alaska, just in time to help support the president's agenda as it goes through congress. Jonathan Teeters is the director of Organizing for America in Alaska. Besides the three largest cities, Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau, he's also going to visit Dillingham and Kodiak.
