Early Pledge Drive

tbt_banner.jpg

It's that time of year when we ask for your support to help us continue to bring you the bits of radio that help you stay an informed citizen (like the debates and election updates), an entertained listener (did you hear This American Life's new spinoff, called Serial?), and apprised of community events (the community calendar is always full this time of year).

Not only will you be supporting all of that goodness, but you'll also be entered into a drawing for a set of cross country skis OR a snowboard from Orion's Mountain Sports if you pledge by midnight on October 29! If you're a new member, you'll be entered into a special drawing for a photography package from Simply Lovette Photograpy -- just in time for the holidays.

Lots of great stuff this Fall for our pledge drive, including an entire day of retro radio on October 30 (and great food). Stop by, tune in, and pledge right here via the Donate Now button or by calling 486-3181. Thanks!

Once upon a time, there was a thriving shrimp fishery in Kodiak, but after a long decline, it disappeared altogether in the mid-1980s. And while the potential for the re-emergence of the fishery someday exists, predicting it is challenging. Shrimp were once so important in Kodiak that the city's official seal includes one, along with a king crab and a brown bear.

With historically low runs to many Kodiak Island streams so far this year, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has closed or restricted several sport fisheries.

The Buskin River sockeye salmon sport fishery is closed as are the Karluk River king salmon sport fishery and the state and federal king salmon subsistence fisheries in the Karluk drainage. In addition, the Ayakulik River king salmon sport fishery is restricted to catch-and-release only, and the use of bait is prohibited.

Kodiak's Madison Kersch is headed to Akron, Ohio, to compete in this year's Soapbox Derby finals. Nicholas Medina of Anchorage will also represent Alaska at the annual championship race.

Madison and Nicholas were two of 30 youth who participated in Saturday's qualifying race in Kodiak. This year marked the 10th running of the Soapbox derby in Kodiak. The race is sponsored by the Kodiak Lion's club.

In addition to generating big smiles from the racers, the event helped raise around $700 for a local family.

Once again, the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly took up the issue of the Cod LLP recency letter at its work session last night. And once again, concerned fishermen and members of the community turned out to voice their opinions on what has become a contentious and divisive matter. The assembly ultimately decided to refine the latest version of a proposed letter to the Secretary of Commerce, requesting that he reject a North Pacific Fishery Management Council plan that significantly reduces the number of participants in the Gulf of Alaska limited entry cod fishery, until a study of its affects has been done.
