A fire Sunday evening destroyed the home of a Kodiak couple on Spruce Cape. Bayside Fire Chief Bob Himes said both his department and the Kodiak Fire Department responded shortly before 6 p.m. to 2483 Spruce Cape Road and found a mobile home fully engulfed, with flames coming out of all the windows and doors.

He said the occupants, Dominick Oberle and Nicole McMorrow, escaped unharmed, after seeing smoke and flames coming from the rear bedroom of the home. Himes says except for a safe with their important papers, the couple lost all of their belongings.

The Kodiak office of the Red Cross has put Oberle and McMorrow in temporary housing and has provided them with extra clothing. Anyone who can help the couple should contact the Red Cross at 486-4040.

State Senate President Gary Stevens of Kodiak is taking to the Internet to ask his constituents for their ideas on what he and his colleagues in the Legislature should be focused on for the rest of this session, and the rest of this year.

The online survey is only 13-questions long, and should only take a couple minutes complete. He said in a written statement that he wants to get a sense of what's on people's minds right now concerning some of the key issues facing the state. You can find the poll here.

Despite knowing full well that paper-craft, scrapbooking and stamping can be addictive, Maggie Wall recently took it up. She was able to tear herself away from the glue and glitter long enough to file this report for us.

Kodiak's annual Whale Fest celebration is coming up this month, despite the cold and snow. And while sightings of baleen whales and orca are on the increase, the well-known pod called "The Kodiak Killers" are late in visiting the Near Island Channel again this year. As University of Alaska whale expert Bree Witteveen tells KMXT's Jay Barrett, there may be cause for concern.

You can find Witteveen's whale sighting reports, and more information on upcoming events, at Whale Fest Kodiak. And if you have a whale sighting, you can find contact information to alert Witteveen so she can pass it on.
