Kodiak, Alaska — Friday, August 28 — The shelter at the Kodiak Middle School was inactivated.
 
People in need of Red Cross services may contact Red Cross volunteers at (907) 942-5059.
 
The Kodiak emergency operations center is now supporting the State Division of Forestry crews who are on location in the Chiniak area.

            Congressman Don Young was the guest of this week's edition of Talk of Alaska. During the one-hour, state-wide, call-in program, two of the participants were from Kodiak.

            Kodiak business owner Rhonda Maker and former Kodiak city councilman, Charlie Davidson took part in the show which is hosted by Steve Heimel.

            During her call, Maker attempted to find out where the congressman stood on a controversial fisheries issue.

AARP Hosts Free Consumer & Investment Workshops

            This Friday and Saturday, AARP is sponsoring a two-day, consumer protection and investment education workshop in Kodiak. While AARP is an organization for the retired community, the workshops are open to anyone who is interested in attending.

            Several agencies are involved with the workshops, including the Better Business Bureau.

Maryland DNR Official Takes Over NMFS

            The new director of NOAA Fisheries introduced himself to the press Tuesday morning with a nationwide conference call. Eric Schwaab was named the assistant administrator for the National Marine Fisheries Service by NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco late last week.

            Most recently Schwaab has been the deputy secretary of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, an agency he's been with since 1983, when he started as a wildlife enforcement officer. He has also served on the Mid Atlantic Fishery Management Council, which is comparable to the North Pacific council, which manages federal fisheries off Alaska.

            A few years ago the Kodiak City Council authorized the sale of a plot of land on Near Island to Paul Zimmer and Tia Leber. While no construction has taken place since then, there has been a lot of development, and now the couple is looking for tenants in what is going to be the Dog Bay Commercial Building.
