KICVB Looks to the Future of Kodiak Tourism

             The Kodiak Island Convention and Visitors Bureau's Janet Buckingham was the featured speaker Monday at the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce member luncheon.

            Buckingham said that last year, much state-wide attention was devoted to predictions about economy-driven decreases in tourism. In her talk, she shared how the real numbers compared to the predictions.

  Alaska won't be realized until the 2012 season.

King Leaving Chamber, Kodiak, After 11 Years

            The Kodiak Chamber of Commerce will soon be looking for a new leader. Debora King, who has been with the chamber for nearly 11 years, will be leaving at the end of the month, and moving from Kodiak with her husband Bill.

Bear Valley Opens

            The Bear Valley Golf Course opened over the weekend. The course sustained considerable damage to three of the nine holes from flooding during last October's storm, and there will be some very noticeable changes, according to course manager Art Bors.

          This week the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly will most likely vote on a new contract for solid waste disposal. Issues surrounding the contract have been publically, and often heatedly, debated for the past three months.

            Assemblymembers has requested three revisions of the contract so far and at last week's work session, they continued to debate the plan.

            On Jock of the Rock this week, Ron, Jay and Michael cover the Kentucky Derby, the NBA and NFL playoffs, and the way the Kodiak High School Bears and Lady Bears dismantelled Homer and Service on the diamond in the season openers. Raphael Matutia threw a five-inning no-hitter in his first start ever.
