Last night it was standing room only for the open house at Fort Abercrombie's ranger station. The big plate of cookies at the door was emptied in no-time, as members of the public packed into the small room to hear about proposed changes to the State Historical Park.

District Ranger Kevin Murphy, moderated as person after person made comments and asked questions about the future of the popular park.At the heart of the controversial issue is the challenge of finding a way to address the needs of a diverse range of park users, while fulfilling the park's primary purpose: promoting the history of the World War Two outpost.

In a chilly, damp and windy location like Kodiak, facial hair is far more common than elsewhere, even the icy arctic. But nobody from the island has ever won the "Mr. Fur Face" state championships, sponsored by the Lions Club and held each year during Anchorage's Fur Rendezvous. Chrystal White, the secretary of the Miners and Trappers Ball which puts on the competition was in town last week trying to change that, and encourage Kodiak men to think about competing.

Since landing on Kodiak Island can be tricky, even for flying reindeer, the Coast Guard has been offering Santa and his elves a lift. Last week children in each of Kodiak's seven villages got a visit from the jolly guy in the red suit.

Atonio Brings Home Wrestling Gold
Monday, 14 December 2009

Jay Barrett/KMXT

The Kodiak High School Bears got two wrestlers into the championship round at the state 4-A wrestling tournament held at Chugiak High in Anchorage over the weekend, and placed 9th overall out of 22 schools. Anthony Atonio will be bringing home wrestling gold for his dramatic pin of Colony High School's Renn Wright with three seconds left in the first round of their championship match at 285 pounds. Atonio steamrolled through the tournament by pinning four of his opponents.

Meanwhile, freshman Eddie Burris could taste the first place title in the 103-pound class against East High School junior Nathan Marquez, taking a 5-0 lead, before being forced into overtime, which the more experienced wrestler won with a takedown, 7-to-5.

Kodiak's Pearson Brodie won 6th place in the 140-pound class.

The tournament was won for the fourth straight year by the Colony Knights who scored 220.5 points, with Lathrop second at 177 points and South Anchorage third with 159. Wasilla, East, Service, North Pole, Chugiak and Skyview rounded out the top 10. Kodiak had 98 team points.
