Throwback Thursday Contest

***THROWBACK THURSDAY CONTEST***

Send us your best throwback photos! On the day of our fund drive, October 30, we'll post an album of all throwback photos we've received and the photo with the most "likes" on Facebook will win a special KMXT/KODK prize.

A throwback is considered a photo taken before today. So, you could send us a picture from October 20, 2014 and it will still apply! But, really, the older the better. Email your entries to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or post them on our facebook page. We'll gather them into an album for October 30. Good luck!

Early Pledge Drive

tbt_banner.jpg

It's that time of year when we ask for your support to help us continue to bring you the bits of radio that help you stay an informed citizen (like the debates and election updates), an entertained listener (did you hear This American Life's new spinoff, called Serial?), and apprised of community events (the community calendar is always full this time of year).

Not only will you be supporting all of that goodness, but you'll also be entered into a drawing for a set of cross country skis OR a snowboard from Orion's Mountain Sports if you pledge by midnight on October 29! If you're a new member, you'll be entered into a special drawing for a photography package from Simply Lovette Photograpy -- just in time for the holidays.

Lots of great stuff this Fall for our pledge drive, including an entire day of retro radio on October 30 (and great food). Stop by, tune in, and pledge right here via the Donate Now button or by calling 486-3181. Thanks!

In the darkness of December, spring may seem a long way off. But the return of spring, and the whales that come with it, are forefront on the minds of the Whale Fest Kodiak volunteers.

One of the coordinators of the festival is Cheryl Nugent, who's been involved in the event since1998. She talked about Whale Fest Kodiak and about the festival planning meeting that takes place tonight.

A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew carried out a rescue aboard the car carrier "Luna Spirit" yesterday morning. The 590-foot vessel was located 150 miles southeast of Kodiak Island at the time of the rescue.

The ship master, Raul  Sempio was hoisted from the Panamanian-flagged vessel and flown to Kodiak. He was then transported to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center. The 61-year old man's condition is reported as stable.

On Tuesday evening, the crew of the Luna Spirit called the Coast Guard to request a medevac for Sempio  who was suffering from stroke symptoms. The Luna Spirit was more than 500 miles southeast of Kodiak on a course from Los Angeles to Japan at the time of the request.

When a night operation was determined unnecessarily risky, a decision was made to launch yesterday morning from Air Station Kodiak. A second MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, also from Kodiak, flew cover for the first helicopter crew and provided offshore communication.

Coast Guard spokeswoman Sara Francis was on the mission. She spoke with KMXT's Diana Gish about the Wednesday morning rescue which took place in 23 mile per hour winds with sea swells up to 20 feet.

During a presentation to the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce on Monday, Harbormaster Marty Owen talked about Kodiak's new boat lift. He offered a short history lesson on the project and talked about the economic potential the new operation can bring to Kodiak.

The Harbormaster's office maintains a list of authorized businesses available to perform contract work for boat owners. Owen says that getting on that list can be a boon for local entrepreneurs.

Some business owners are moving to Kodiak because of the new lift. That includes Dennis Butts who owns Quality Marine of Alaska. Butts recently expanded his business by opening up a branch in Kodiak.

He spoke to KMXT's Diana Gish from Seward.

Before the Kodiak Island Borough School District can receive building funds from the state, it has to have a plan in place that meets Alaska education specifications. In order to ensure that the building plans meet those standards, the district wants to hire a company that specializes in that sort of thing.

For that reason the board of education passed a sole-source contract with DeJong and Associates, to refine the educational specifications document for the Kodiak High School Renovation and Expansion project.
