Early Pledge Drive

tbt_banner.jpg

It's that time of year when we ask for your support to help us continue to bring you the bits of radio that help you stay an informed citizen (like the debates and election updates), an entertained listener (did you hear This American Life's new spinoff, called Serial?), and apprised of community events (the community calendar is always full this time of year).

Not only will you be supporting all of that goodness, but you'll also be entered into a drawing for a set of cross country skis OR a snowboard from Orion's Mountain Sports if you pledge by midnight on October 29! If you're a new member, you'll be entered into a special drawing for a photography package from Simply Lovette Photograpy -- just in time for the holidays.

Lots of great stuff this Fall for our pledge drive, including an entire day of retro radio on October 30 (and great food). Stop by, tune in, and pledge right here via the Donate Now button or by calling 486-3181. Thanks!

Questions about gravel were raised at Thursday's regular meeting of the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly.

During the public comments portion of the meeting, two people addressed the borough's upcoming lease with for getting more gravel from the pit in Women's Bay.

One of the questions raised, regarded a reclamation plan for the gravel pit; if there is one in place as required by law and how it will be paid for. A comment was made about the need to look for gravel in a different location than the current site in Bell's Flats.

On Friday, Community Development Director Bud Cassidy responded to some of the concerns.

Kodiak Representative Alan Austerman has moved into a leadership position in the Alaska State House. He was named the House Majority Whip at a caucus meeting in Fairbanks this week, after some reshuffling of personnel in the majority.

Austerman replaces former whip Nancy Dahlstrom of Eagle River, who was named the new Rules Committee Chair, after the former chair John Coghill moved the State Senate.

Coming up on this week's show, beluga protection could be another blow to an already-embattled commercial fishery in Cook Inlet; the Board of Fish is meeting right now in Anchorage to consider Bristol Bay finfish proposals; and there's lots of news from MSC. Also, learning more about the Giant Pacific Octopus. We had help this week from APRN's Annie Feidt in Anchorage, KDLG's Mike Mason and Adam Kane in Dillingham, and KUCB's Anne Hillman in Unalaska.

Kodiak College has a new student newspaper. The paper is called "The Emerald Looking Glass."

KMXT's Diana Gish tells the story of how it came to be:

Vince Lombardi said that "Once a man has made a commitment to a way of life, he puts the greatest strength in the world behind him. It's something we call heart power. Once a man has made this commitment, nothing will stop him short of success."

Lombardi could have been describing Alicia Briggs. She's the editor of Kodiak College's new student newspaper. Brigg's commitment began when her first article appeared in print.
