The long-awaited nationwide switch to digital TV is Friday, when all analog television broadcasts from full power stations will be replaced by digital transmission as mandated by Congress and the Federal Communications Commission in 2005. The switch however won't have an immediate effect on Kodiak television viewers or others in rural Alaska, at least not in the short term. For more information, visit the National Association of Broadcasters' Low Power TV answers page.

The Kodiak Women's Resource and Crisis Center screens films every Wednesday night as part of its Wednesday Night at the Movies program, intended to help   victims cope with domestic violence and sexual assault and abuse. This month's films include topics such as divorce, domestic violence, violent crime and verbal abuse.

Angela Bowling is the outreach coordinator at KWRCC. She said that the Wednesday night film program, which is open to all adults, both male and female, supports victims by teaching coping techniques as well as putting a face to issues and problems they may be experiencing in their own lives.

In the current issue of the Alaska Journal of Commerce, reporter Margie Bauman has a trio of stories on how Crab Rationalization came to be. One story is about what she described as the "high pressure tactics" used at a June 2002 North Pacific Council meeting in Unalaska where processor shares were floated. KMXT's Jay Barrett spoke with Bauman about that meeting, and the meeting wrapping up in Anchorage.

Bauman says it's important for Alaskans - even those who are not involved in the fishery - to be informed about the activities of the North Pacific Council. She says even though it has been privatized, the crab fishery is still a public resource. You can read Bauman's articles online at the Alaska Journal of Commerce online, and you can hear more of the conversation on this week's Alaska Fisheries Report.
