Local Candidate Debate

Kodiak's candidates for local government positions will face off on September 23 at 6pm in the Borough Assembly Chambers. Candidates include those running for the City Council, School Board and Borough Assembly. The event is sponsored by Chamber of Commerce and KMXT and will be broadcast live on KMXT 100.1FM

            The Alaska Journal of Commerce has once again named Edward Jones Investments to the number one spot on the Best Places to Work in Alaska List for 2009. It's an honor the company received both last year and in 2007.

            Craig Johnson, who opened the first Edward Jones office in Kodiak almost 12 years ago, agrees that it's a great company to be associated with.

            The harbormasters and port administrators have returned to their home ports following last week's statewide conference in Kodiak. By all accounts the four day event was a success.

            One of those that took part was Jean Barrett, the port director of Dillingham. KMXT's Diana Gish asked him what he hoped to get out of his stay in Kodiak.

Veco's Bill Allen Sentenced to Three Years

            The City of Kodiak held a christening for the new large boat lift yesterday at noon, and the ceremony went off with only one slight hitch: it took two swings to break the bottle of champagne on the side of travel lift. Jay Barrett has more.

Near Island Quarry Planning Under Way

            Last year the Kodiak City Council decided to expand the Near Island quarry area to make more land available for the city's new boatyard.

            At the regular meeting on Thursday the next step was taken towards the creation of a quarry development plan. The council voted on a contract proposal from P-N-and-D to prepare the plan. Developing the plan requires surveying the quarry area, estimating remaining rock volumes and designing a final quarry configuration. P-N-and-D submitted a time and materials proposal to complete the work for just over 44 thousand dollars.
