An unanticipated consequence of the city's new long-term parking policy at Saint Paul Harbor was pointed out to the Kodiak City Council at its meeting last night. The new policy requires parking permits for the long-term parking area near the Harbormaster's Office, but they can only be bought by people who already lease a slip in the harbor. Non-harbor customers are ineligible, which could cause problems for villagers like Barbara Anderson, who came to town from Ouzinkie yesterday for Crab Fest.

One of the biggest attractions at Crab Fest of course, is the carnival rides. Yesterday, the rides and the crew that operates them arrived on the ferry Kennicott.

Golden Wheel Amusements is the company that brings the carnival to Kodiak. Own of the owners is Jacquelyn Leavitt. She talked about the excitement that greets her group when they arrive in town.

Crab Fest and warm weather have arrived at long last. KMXT's Diana Gish went to downtown Kodiak yesterday afternoon to soak up the sun and check out the action. Her adventure included some delicious free samples, a demonstration of the "crab dance" and a shouted conversation with tourists high aboard the cruise ship Amsterdam.

Crab Fest runs from noon today to 5 p.m. on Monday.

Kodiak will be overrun with politicians this weekend, as all the declared candidates for governor will be in town for the big fisheries debate tomorrow night. And just for good measure, Alaska's Senators will be visiting too. Lisa Murkowski is on the re-election trail and Mark Begich is making an appearance at Crab Fest.

Besides incumbent Sean Parnell, seeking his first election to the governor's office, Republican challengers Ralph Samuels and Bill Walker will be in attendance, as will Democratic hopefuls Ethan Berkowitz, Hollis French and Bob Poe.

Organizer Laine Welch, producer of Fish Radio, says the tradition of the "Goober Debates," as they've come to be known, started 20 years ago.
