Kodiak, Alaska — Friday, August 28 — The shelter at the Kodiak Middle School was inactivated.
 
People in need of Red Cross services may contact Red Cross volunteers at (907) 942-5059.
 
The Kodiak emergency operations center is now supporting the State Division of Forestry crews who are on location in the Chiniak area.

Fish and Game Losing Top Fisheries Official

            Alaska Department of Fish and Game is losing a top fisheries official. Commercial Fisheries Director John Hilsinger will soon be leaving along with Fish and Game Commissioner Denby Lloyd. The two announced their retirement simultaneously in an email to staff last month.

            Across public lands on Kodiak Island are numerous makeshift shooting ranges. These so-called bandit ranges often look out over open water or face residential areas. Now the borough is trying to clean up these sites and discourage unsafe shooting. KMXT's Jacob Resneck reports.

            It's not too late to submit questions for an upcoming candidate forum. Vying for the District 36 House is incumbent Republican Alan Austerman and Democratic challenger Terry Haines. The Kodiak Chamber of Commerce and KMXT are sponsoring a debate between the two men scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly's chambers.

            This weekend a Kodiak-based volunteer theater group is putting on a production of Margaret Edson's Wit.

            Wit won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1999. Veronica Costa Bolton, plays Dr. Vivian Bearing, a self-assured professor of literature diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Jenny Stevens directed the play.
