Throwback Thursday Contest

***THROWBACK THURSDAY CONTEST***

Send us your best throwback photos! On the day of our fund drive, October 30, we'll post an album of all throwback photos we've received and the photo with the most "likes" on Facebook will win a special KMXT/KODK prize.

A throwback is considered a photo taken before today. So, you could send us a picture from October 20, 2014 and it will still apply! But, really, the older the better. Email your entries to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or post them on our facebook page. We'll gather them into an album for October 30. Good luck!

Early Pledge Drive

tbt_banner.jpg

It's that time of year when we ask for your support to help us continue to bring you the bits of radio that help you stay an informed citizen (like the debates and election updates), an entertained listener (did you hear This American Life's new spinoff, called Serial?), and apprised of community events (the community calendar is always full this time of year).

Not only will you be supporting all of that goodness, but you'll also be entered into a drawing for a set of cross country skis OR a snowboard from Orion's Mountain Sports if you pledge by midnight on October 29! If you're a new member, you'll be entered into a special drawing for a photography package from Simply Lovette Photograpy -- just in time for the holidays.

Lots of great stuff this Fall for our pledge drive, including an entire day of retro radio on October 30 (and great food). Stop by, tune in, and pledge right here via the Donate Now button or by calling 486-3181. Thanks!

The Kodiak Island Borough Assembly has pledged matching funds to the Kodiak Maritime Museum in the amount of $25,000. The assembly is lending its support to the museum's efforts to turn the fishing vessel Thelma C into an interpretive display near Saint Paul harbor.

The assembly has agreed to provide financial support on condition that the state legislature comes through with funding first. The museum has requested $140,000 of funding from the state. Grant funding from the Rasmuson Foundation has also been applied for.

The executive director of the Kodiak Maritime Museum is Toby Sullivan. He said that if the state and borough funding comes through, it will help pay for turning the old wooden seiner into an interpretive display near Oscar's Dock.

Studies show that eating fish helps cut the risk of heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, stroke, diabetes and arthritis. The American Heart Association recommends that adults eat at least two fish meals per week, especially wild salmon, herring and sardines, because those varieties provide the most heart-healthy omega 3s.

Researchers in Kodiak think that nutrition-minded consumers might buy more canned salmon if producers can promise consistent levels of omega-3 oils in every can. University of Alaska Fairbanks graduate student Trina Lapis has just completed a thesis on this topic based on research she's been performing with a team of scientists in Kodiak.

The fat content of Pacific salmon varies naturally in wild-caught fish. That variation creates an inconsistency in the amount of omega-3 available in every serving of canned salmon.

Lapis wanted to test what would happen if salmon oil is added to canned bright or dark pink salmon.
