Kodiak Electric Association announced the winners of its Energy Hero essay competition in its February newsletter. KEA spokeswoman Nancy Sweeny said 14 entries were received, and first place went to an essay written by Lisa Wright about the changes she and Shawn Olsen have made in their home and lifestyle to save energy.

--          (KEA 1            38 sec              "There are a number of ... Energy Heroes ourselves.")

Sweeny said Wright's essay highlighted the energy saving lifestyle that the judges were looking for:

--          (KEA 2            47 sec              "Shawn's home underwent ... as be more efficient.")

Wright and Olsen received at 350-dollar electricity certificate for their first-place essay. Mensch won a 200-dollar certificate and Darminio a 100-dollar certificate. Each of the other 11 entries got a 50-dollar certificate.

Sweeny said the entries were judged on a broad array of factors:

--          (KEA 3            25 sec              "Selecting the top stories ... kilowatts consumed.")

Sweeny didn't want to reveal everyone's energy hero secrets all at once, saying they will be detailed in upcoming newsletters, but said there are conservation tips - and electronic copies of the newsletters - on the co-op's website, Kodiak Electric dot com.
