The
Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference held its Annual Economic Summit and
Membership Meeting on January 29th and 30th at the Hotel Captain Cook in
Anchorage.
Kodiak
City councilman Terry
Haines was in attendance at the meeting's fish forum. KMXT's Erik Wander has
more.
Haines
said Doctor John Lynham of the University of Hawaii, Doctor Seth Macinko
(Muh-SINK-oh) of the University of Rhode Island and Arne Fluglvog (Flugle-vog),
Senator Lisa Murkowski's fisheries advisor, offered their perspectives and the
federal government's position on rationalization programs at the meeting.
-- (SWAMC
1 55
sec. "Dr.
Lynham told us ... something that is killing you.")
Haines
said it's important for Kodiak to develop a unified fisheries policy that
addresses the concepts of catch shares and privatization in order to understand
how they can best benefit Kodiak.
-- (SWAMC 2 60
sec. "We
need to start work ... important to us as a community.")
Haines
said Fluglvog reported at the meeting that the Obama administration is in favor
of catch shares. But he said it is vital for fishing communities like Kodiak to
share their experiences in helping shape a national policy.
-- (SWAMC 3 60
sec. "The
Obama administration loves ... as it goes forward.")
At
a joint Borough Assembly and City Council work session Tuesday evening, Borough
Mayor Jerome Selby strongly agreed that Kodiak needs a community fishery policy
statement as did several other Borough and City officials. I'm Erik Wander.
