The Kodiak Kid Wrestling program held its final tournament on Saturday, wrapping up the short season for most of the club’s younger wrestlers. Coach Kevin Lepola said those above the third grade, including middle and high school wrestlers, will keep wrestling for what is called the “extended season,” and work toward the state tournament in May.
Practice for that begins today, but two wrestlers will be heading north for competition this week as part of the Arctic Winter Games.
Lepola said KHS Freshman Krystal Fabricante and Junior Joel Valdez will head to Fairbanks this week with Coach Michelle Canete to compete on an international scale.
“So it’s kind of an ambassador from Alaska if you will. A team that travels. And they have a different style of wrestling one of the days and I think they compete in freestyle and then folkstyle as well.”
The Arctic Games start on Saturday and run through March 22. The games are a circumpolar sport competition that brings athletes from northern and arctic nations together to promote athleticism and culture. Wrestling is one of about 18 sports featured during the week-long event, including snowboarding, volleyball, figure skating and cross country skiing, among others.
