Persistent and at times heavy rain has saturated hillsides in and around the city of Kodiak, causing at least five landslides, one causing a detour to the main route into town.
The Kodiak Police Department reports a slide blocking Rezanof Drive West near Pier 2, forcing morning commuter traffic in both directions to take Shelikof Street.
The police are also advising people avoid Alder Way, a short, steep road in a densely-packed residential neighborhood overlooking the downtown harbors. Police say the hillside has become unstable, and that emergency crews are on the scene evaluating the situation.
Further from downtown, at least four slides have left debris in the road near Women’s Bay. State Department of Transportation crews are on the scene and clearing one landslide at Shannon Point.
Schools in town will open, though busses are likely running late from Bells Flats and beyond.
