The
Kodiak City Council bid farewell to longtime Councilman Charlie Davidson
Thursday.
Davidson, who
served 15 years on the council, gave a tearful goodbye speech, at the beginning
of which he pretended to be his twin brother, Cliff. He then touched on some of
the themes of his tenure on the city’s governing body.
(Charlie
Goodbye 1 1:00 “…encourage any citizen to give it a
go.”)
All
of his fellow council members shared fond memories of serving with Davidson.
Especially Tom Walters, who joined the council at the same time as Davidson,
and will continue to serve after being sworn in to a sixth consecutive term
Thursday night.
(Charlie
Goodbye 2 :44s “…can’t ask for any more in a
person.”)
Taking
Davidson’s place on the council is Paul Smith, who was elected by Kodiak voters
at the October 7th municipal election. Smith acknowledged that
filling Davidson’s seat would be pretty near impossible.
(Charlie
Goodbye 3 :18s “…here to fill not his shoes or his
chair.”)
Davidson
said he would like to remain involved in local politics, mostly as an observer.
He joked that as a private citizen he was going to try and raise money for a
tram going from downtown to the top of Pillar Mountain, something he once
suggested that the city should do to boost tourism.
