Organizers of one of the local efforts to raise funds to help victims of typhoon Haiyan are preparing to bring the aid to the Philippines. Alvin Arboleda says total donations so far have reached $8,800, the majority of that coming from the sale of eggrolls.
Almost $700 has been donated through deposit into an account at Wells Fargo, and another $750 was raised from a special Zumba exercise class conducted by Laura Arboleda.
The Fil-Am Association of Kodiak has also been raising funds for victims of the storm, described as the largest in recorded history, which left nearly 6,000 dead and 2,000 missing.
Arboleda and his friends had started raising funds to assist the area after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Bohol on October 15th, just three weeks before typhoon Haiyan. He said that he does not have any relatives in the most severely affected area, but he will be traveling to the Philippines Wednesday to deliver the money raised in Kodiak.
