Volleyball
As we all know, Kodiak’s bears are the larger cousins to grizzly bears, and that lesson was reiterated in Anchorage over the weekend when the Kodiak High School Bears defeated host Grace Christian in the championship match of the Lady Grizzlies Invitational Volleyball Tournament.
The Bears were the only large school at the dozen-team tournament, and played like it, dropping only one game in 20 matches. Along the way, Isabelle Riian was named defensive MVP and Summer McKechnie was named most valuable setter. Megan Pyles, Hannah Wandersee and Carissa Cannon were named to the all-tournament team.
Football
The football season came to a close for the Bears, falling 47-to-7 to the Kenai Kardinals in the first round of the medium-school playoffs.
Cross Country
Two-time defending boys state champion Levi Thomet finally saw some competition, and the back of another rrunner, on the cross-country trails, taking second at the George Fox Invitational in Portland, Oregon. Finishing in 14-minutes 43-seconds, he was 10 seconds behind the winner, who set the fastest time in the nation this year. Thomet’s time, however, was the fastest ever set by a Kodiak High School runner. Meanwhile, Kenai’s two-time defending girls state champ Allie Ostrander crushed the competition with a winning time of 16-minutes 47.8-seconds. Both are ranked 17th nationally.
