The
Kodiak High School volleyball team continued its winning ways, scoring first
place at the Grace Invitational Volleyball Tournament over the weekend in
Anchorage. It was the Bears second first place finish in a tournament in as
many weeks.
And this time they had to do it the hard way. Not
only did Friday’s windstorm in Anchorage almost prevent the Bears from
traveling to the tournament, but the team had to come from the loser’s bracket
to defeat Grace Christian School, two times in a row, to take the Gold Pan
Trophy.
Kodiak actually lost to Grace earlier in
the tournament, which put them into the loser’s bracket, where they beat
Skyview. Facing Grace Christian again, the Bears won 25-23 and 25-22 forcing
another match to determine the championship.
In that match Kodiak started slow, losing
game one 13-25. But the Bears took the next two games, 25-14 and 15-9.
Kodiak’s Linzee Burcham, Addie Jones, and
Maureen Sabado were voted by opposing coaches to the all-tournament team with
Sabado picking up Most Valuable Player honors. It’s the second weekend in a row
that Sabado has been voted MVP for a tournament by opposing coaches.
The Bears have this weekend off before
ending the regular season at home the last two weekends against Palmer and
Colony.
