This fall Kodiak residents will take to the polls and elect a number of borough-related positions. The nominating petitions and candidates’ handbook became available on Monday, and the filing period for the October election opens on August 1.
This year there are two borough assembly seats open as the terms of Assemblywomen Louise Stutes and Carol Austerman expire. Likewise, the office of borough mayor is up for election as Jerome Selby’s term ends in October. Those positions serve three-year seats.
Also opening up this year are two school board seats. Melissa Borton’s three year seat is up for grabs, as is Rick Kniaziowski’s one year seat.
On the service area board side of things there are openings on Service Area No. 1 and the Womens Bay Area Board. The Bay View and Monashka Bay Road Service Area Boards also have openings this fall, as does Fire Protection Area No. 1.
Those seeking mayor, borough assembly or school board positions must be qualified borough voters and have lived within the borough for at least one year. Service area positions require a candidate to have lived within the service area for at least 30 days.
The candidate filing period is open until August 15. This year’s election will be held on October 1.
