Kodiak’s annual clean up day won’t be for another two weekends, but several groups are gearing up already. At Thursday’s borough assembly meeting, two members of the Solid Waste Advisory Board briefed the assembly members about the preparations.
Scott Arndt, vice-chair of the SWAB, said he’s spoken with employees at the landfill and came away with some suggestions for this year’s clean up.
“We’re basically are recommending looking to recommend that during the two clean up weekends you not charge for metals going out to the dump," he said, adding that the intent is not to open it up to automobile drop offs at no charge.
Cindy Harrington also reported on a SWAB subcommittee about its outreach efforts, saying, “We’re also working on messages for display adds and radio ads that will start up in may."
She also gave a shout-out to several other groups in Kodiak that are taking on clean up activities around town, including the ad hoc "Project Clean Up" group, which meets on Sundays to tackle a specific clean up; the Girl Scouts and KUBS, the Kodiak Unified Bear Subcommittee, which she said was preparing a campaign focusing on cleaning up to avoid bear problems.
Clean Up Day on base will be on Friday, May 3rd, and elsewhere around the borough the next day, May 4th. The City of Kodiak, which in the past provided roadside trash bag pick up, will not be doing so this year.
