Wednesday, 19 September 2012

A number of Kodiak Island residents felt the shake of a moderate earthquake which struck off Ahkiok late Monday afternoon. The Alaska Tsunami Warning Center reports that the quake occurred at 5:45 p.m. Monday and was located 90 southwest of the city of Kodiak.

Paul Whitmore, the center’s director, said this (Tuesday) afternoon that the initial magnitude of the quake was put at five-point-two (5.2) but has since been upgraded by the USGS to five-point-five (5.5).

The quake originated 30 miles beneath Alitak Bay, off the village of Ahkiok. It was followed by several much smaller aftershocks.

No watch or warnings were issued following Monday’s quake.
