Playing
host to the Soldotna Stars Friday and Saturday, the Kodiak High School
volleyball team showed sparks of brilliance, but in the end were overpowered
both days. On Friday, the Bears dominated the third game 25-to-15, and came
back to win the first game on Saturday 25-to-20, but lost both matches
three-games to one.
On the
gridiron Saturday night, the Bears football team was edged by Thunder Mountain
in Juneau 14-to-13. A drive where the Bears were on the five-yard line with
under a minute left was broken up by the Falcons to seal the win. The game was
a fundraiser for Marine Staff Sgt. Thomas McRae, a former Juneau resident who
was severely injured serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The game against Thunder
Mountain was not a conference game. The Bears are now 1-and-2 overall and
1-and-0 in the Northern Lights Conference. Their third weekend on the road will
be this Saturday in Kenai against the Kardinals. Home-coming will be September
15th against Soldotna on the brand new field at Baranof Park.
In the
pool, the Kodiak team picked up where it left off last year, winning both days
this weekend against East Anchorage.
