The Kodiak
High School Bears football team kicked off the 2012 season on Saturday against
the West Anchorage JV in grand fashion, rolling up 45 points and holding the
Eagles to zero.
The "mercy
rule," which kicks in when one team is so far ahead that officials keep the
clock running, was instituted in the second quarter, resulting in a very quick
game. KVOK broadcast team Doug Letch and Steve Rounsaville have the call at the
final buzzer:
-- (Football 1 27 sec "With the running clock ... a lot tougher for the Bears I
think.")
After some
disappointing seasons, Letch said some questioned whether the Bears could even
compete with a big mainland school, but he was optimistic:
-- (Football 2 57 sec "I thought the Bears would ... give you a pretty good
football team.")
Kodiak will
once again play host next Saturday in a conference game against the Houston
Hawks. Like the West game, it will be played on the Woody Way Field. The Bears
then hit the road for three weeks, returning to host arch-rival Soldotna in the
homecoming game - perhaps on the team's brand new field at Baranof Park.
