The Senior
Citizens of Kodiak along with Kodiak Area Native Association will be hosting
the 5th annual Aging Connection Conference in town next weekend. Mary
Donaldson has more.
Senior citizens,
baby boomers and caregivers to the elderly are all invited to take part in a
two day conference being held at the Kodiak
Senior Center.
Marlo Moore works for the Senior
Center and is the program
coordinator for the event. She says education will be on several aging topics.
(Moore
1 :40s “…end of life issues.”)
Moore says end of life
issues include funeral arrangements, wills, trusts, and more importantly how to
approach these topics with a loved one or for the senior citizen themselves.
There will also be a wealth of information dealing with aging concerns for the
individual.
(Moore
2 :31s “…keeping them sharp.”)
Other matters
that will be discussed are aging diseases like Alzheimer’s, and all of the
different aspects involved with it, for instance what signs to be aware of it if
it develops in an individual. The list of speakers, both local and from out of
town, will address financial issues, economic issues and resources, the
connection of families and aging, and the dilemmas and concerns involved with growing
older. Moore
says with education and support, the aging process can be a smooth transition
for everyone involved, which is the ultimate goal for the conference.
(Moore
3 :38s “…in those issues.”)
The Aging
Connection Conference will begin Saturday September 13th, starting
at 9 a.m. running until 4 p.m., and on Sunday the 14th from 1 to 3
p.m. at the Kodiak
Senior Center.
Those interested can find registration forms at KANA, Providence
Kodiak Island Medical
Center or at the Senior Center.
The center was recently re-accredited
by the National Council on Aging and the National Institute of Senior Centers, and
remains the first and only nationally accredited senior center in Alaska. The senior
center recently went through a rigorous self-assessment which was reviewed by
national peer reviewers. A minimum score of 75 is required for each standard in
order to pass accreditation.
I’m Mary
Donaldson.
