At a recent
joint meeting of the Kodiak City Council and the Kodiak Island Borough
Assembly, their shared fisheries advisor, Denby Lloyd, spoke about the North
Pacific Fishery Management Council meeting scheduled for Kodiak in early June.
He
suggested the members of both bodies make a point to reach out to and talk with
the fish council members.
-- (NPFMC 1 37 sec "I'm not talking about formal ... community and open for
business.")
City
Councilman Terry Haines concurred, adding that the people on the Scientific and
Statistical Committee and Advisory Panel are often more available to talk with
casually. Councilman John Whiddon said this meeting will allow the community to
present a united front:
-- (NPFMC 2 28 sec "Kodiak's always very, very well ... we are somewhat
contentious.")
Haines also
suggested support for an idea that came up at the fish council's February
meeting to create a planning team for socio-economic issues.
-- (NPFMC 3 22 sec "I think that's something we ... that we should really
welcome.")
Lloyd said
there are many important topics on the North Pacific council's agenda, but one
stands out:
-- (NPFMC 4 24 sec "One of the most important ... fixed-gear groundfish fishery.")
The
Advisory Panel and the Scientific and Statistical Committee begin meeting June
4th, with the North Pacific Fishery Management Council itself
starting on June 6th, and lasting into early the next week.
