The Alaska
Marine Highway System is adding a new stop to its schedule this week. The
Spruce Island village of Ouzinkie, which for years has watched the ferry
Tustumena sail right past town as it makes runs between Kodiak and Port Lions,
will get service starting Friday.
Jeremy
Woodrow is a spokesman for the ferry system.
-- (Ferry 1 26 sec "The first ferry will call on ... receive direct ferry
service.")
The new
service is made possible by recently constructed waterfront facilities in the
village.
-- (Ferry 2 10 sec "The community actually ... Tustumena specifically in
mind.")
The
Tustumena made a trial run to the village recently, paving the way for the
scheduled service. Like Port Lions, the dock at Ouzinkie will not be able to
handle the larger ferry Kennicott, which generally serves Kodiak part time
during the summer.
While
operating on the winter schedule, the Tusty will call on Ouzinkie once a month,
but in the summer, Woodrow says it'll be every other Friday.
-- (Ferry 3 15 sec "Yeah, actually the full schedule will ... Port Lions, to
Homer.")
He said the
addition of Ouzinkie to its ports of call doesn't change much elsewhere in the
ferry system schedule or operations:
-- (Ferry 4 28 sec "The Tusty, when it sails from ... extra cost to the
ferry system.")
An adult
fare is $33 each way between Ouzinkie and Kodiak.
