Governor Sean Parnell released his
budget for 2013 today. The $12.1 billion dollar budget is $600 million less
than last year.
Proposed
spending for Kodiak and surrounding areas totals just over $41 million.
Included is just over $3 million for phase two of the Kodiak Island Borough
landfill lateral expansion. Borough Mayor Jerome Selby is hopeful the project
will make it through future budget revisions.
-- (Gov Budget 1 :21 "That
will help the community a lot ... much easier in trying to get that 3 million
dollar project.")
Also
included in the governor's budget is $909,000 for the Pillar Creek Hatchery,
over $1.3 million for phase six of the Aleutian Homes water and sewer
replacement and $26 million for improvements at the Kodiak Airport.
Afognak could see $1.55 million from the state for the Kitoi Bay Hatchery and Old Harbor
$4.5 million for expansion of their airport.
Representative
Alan Austerman says his job is to now reintroduce and defend projects that
might have been cut from the governor's picks.
-- (Gov Budget :28 "And
also to make sure ... figure out how to balance out the total budget that we're
gonna end up with.")
