May is
"Older Americans Month," and given that Kodiak's senior citizen population
grows by about 10 percent per year, KMXT's Talk of the Rock hosted three people
whose jobs it is to help folks in Kodiak live longer, with independence, honor
and dignity.
That phrase
is actually the mission statement of the Senior Citizens of Kodiak , which
Executive Director Pat Branson says truly does drive the mission of the center.
-- (Senior 1 36 sec "You
know we develop ... there were gasps in the audience.")
Marita
Kaplan, the director of the Island Cove Adult Day Program at the senior center
says the longevity of the staff contributes to the quality of service seniors
receive:
-- (Senior 2 40 sec "I've
been there 12 years ... how well that works.")
Kaplan says
that while services at the senior center are for those 60 and older, Island
Cove is open to anyone who needs their services:
-- (Senior 3 30 sec "The
adult day program is ... we see more of that.")
Rio Demers
(D'merrs), with the senior in-home and family care-giver program, says the
Kodiak Senior Center can help individuals care for their senior family members,
even from afar:
-- (Senior 4 39 sec "If
the senior is in mainland ... that information in hand.")
