Kodiak residents
got a bit of a surprise during last night's regular city council meeting. The
council accepted the resignation of one of the council members who is leaving town.
KMXT's
Maggie Wall has details.

Kodiak
Mayor Carolyn Floyd was the first to mention the departure of City
Councilman Paul
Smith, who had submitted his letter of resignation from the council.
Floyd's
comments came at the end of the meeting under Mayor's Comments..
-- Carolyn
Floyd and Tom Walters :42
Smith, an
Episcopalian minister, has accepted a position as the pastor of a church
in Eagle River.
Smith commented
first about the new jail and his days working in the police department
before
mentioning his departure.
-- Paul Smith :38
Council
members, the city clerk and city manager all expressed their thanks for
Smith's
work on the council-his quiet manner and thoughtful comments.
The process
to replace Smith will begin immediately, with a search for a volunteer
within
the city limits who will be appointed to fill the open seat until the
fall
election.
City Clerk
Debra Marlar explained that with the council declaring the seat vacant
at the
end of July, that means the city will begin advertising for a
replacement to
serve roughly two months-- from the end of August to the end of October.
By
that time the October city election results will be certified and the
new
voted-into-office council member will assume the seat.
What that
will means for Kodiak voters is that in addition to the two regular
3-year-seats on the October municipal ballot, there will also be a one-year-seat
to fill the remainder of Smith's term.
People
interested in putting their name in for appointment to the newly opening
seat
on the council should contact City Clerk Debra Marlar.
I'm Maggie
Wall.
