            When the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly meets tomorrow night (tonight) in a work session, it’ll receive an update from the school district on its plans for a new Kodiak High School building.

The district’s Operations Manager Scott Williams highlighted the need for a new facility in a report to the school board on Monday. Williams says the current high school is insufficient to meet the needs of students.

The school board earlier this month approved a master plan for a new high school facility. The proposed building comes with an estimated price tag of 96-million dollars, and would require the assembly to put a bond initiative on the October ballot to help pay for it. School board member Jeff Stephan says the community needs a new high school.

In order to meet the district’s timeline to have the issue go to voters in October, the borough assembly must approve the bond initiative by August.

Supporters of the bond measure got some good news this week, when Governor Sarah Palin signed legislation extending a state program that reimburses school districts 60 percent of bonded construction costs for new school facilities.
