Repairs to portions of Rezanof Drive and the Chiniak Highway are planned for this summer. The work is a result of the damage caused by flooding and landslides in October and November of 2009.

Five portions of the road will be repaired by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.

Because the work falls under the scope of the National Historic Preservation Act as well as wetland and floodplain protections, the D-O-T is soliciting comments on the proposed repairs.

The repairs include adding riprap at milepost five-point-five to repair erosion around the culvert at Devil's Creek. Riprap will also be added to the streambed at milepost nine-point-six of Rezanof Drive to improve fish passage. At milepost 10-point-nine, the culvert at Paramanoff Creek will be upgraded from six feet to eight feet in diameter. On the Chiniak Highway, some debris will be excavated and riprap will be added to stabilize the road embankment at milepost six-point-two and 12-point-four.

Work will also be conducted in several fish streams. A small amount of wetland fill may be required at milepost 10-point-9 of Rezanof Drive where an existing cross culvert will be replaced. Some vegetation may be cleared to provide equipment access.

Public comments and recommendations for the project will be accepted by D-O-T until April 1st.

The work is expected to begin this summer and traffic delays or temporary closures are likely.
