The Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference held its annual meeting in Anchorage late last week. SWAMC is regional membership organization that advocates for the interests of Southwest Alaska businesses and communities.

Kodiak City Councilman Terry Haines is on the board of directors and was also one of this year's presenters.

--          (SWAMC 1                21 sec              "I spoke about the ... some flux right now.")

Haines says the United Fishermen of Alaska, the state's largest fishermen's organization, is against all of the options associated with the Crew Data Project, which Haines says is unfortunate.

--          (SWAMC 2                44 sec              "Fishing communities really ... to us, economically.")

He said SWAMC passed a resolution urging the state to continue moving toward getting the crew data project implemented. He said other resolutions may sound a little odd to those not familiar with the issues they address:

--          (SWAMC 3                37 sec              "We have resolutions ... Alaska's like mostly wetlands.")

He said that could conceivably take more land use decisions out of the hands of the state and put them into the hands of the feds. The "anti-corruption" resolution opposes a bill that could potentially bar cities from spending money to lobby the legislature.

SWAMC also hosted almost all of the candidates for Alaska governor at the meeting. The notable no-show was incumbent Sean Parnell:

--          (SWAMC 4                19 sec              "Yeah, he did. ... quite disappointed, I'm sure.")

The Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference encompasses the Kodiak Island Borough, Bristol Bay, the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Chain.
