The Kodiak Island Borough School District is looking into launching an anti-graffitti task force. That's according to Steve Doerksen  the district's director of schools and student services.

He talked about how the idea came about.

--          (Graffitti 1                                              "Earlier in the ...remove graffiti.")

Doerksen emphasized that graffiti is "not art" but a crime: one that's considered criminal mischief and can be classified as either a misdemeanor or a felony.

Doerksen  is in the process of finding out how one creates a "Graffitti Abatement Team."

--          (Graffitti 2                                             "It's a little ...  it be successful.")

Doerksen's  research on the topic has introduced him to other similar programs, including one in Alaska.

--          (Graffitti 3                                             "And I'm hearing ...proactive also.")

He said that one of the reasons for the success of Fairbank's graffiti abatement program is quick action.

--          (Graffitti 4                                   "Graffitti should be ... same thing here.)

If you're interested in doing something about graffiti problems in Kodiak, Doerkson would like to talk to you. He can be reached at 481-6207.
