Kodiak Representative Alan Austerman has moved into a leadership position in the Alaska State House. He was named the House Majority Whip at a caucus meeting in Fairbanks this week, after some reshuffling of personnel in the majority.

Austerman replaces former whip Nancy Dahlstrom of Eagle River, who was named the new Rules Committee Chair, after the former chair John Coghill moved the State Senate.

Austerman says the Majority Whip helps manage floor sessions and assists the majority leader.

--          (Austerman 1              31 sec              "I'll see it more as a ... that type of position.")

He said moving into the leadership position will allow him to work on issues from the inside out:

--          (Austerman 2              24 sec              "It puts me in a position ... to the state of Alaska.")

Today, Austerman's subcommittee (will be holding) (held) a hearing regarding the performance of the State Department of Community and Economic Development:

--          (Austerman 3              54 sec              "In reviewing my job as ... they hadn't done that.")

Austerman says the department is not aiming high enough in its economic development duties:

--          (Austerman 4              54 sec              "There's some very deep problems ... out of the state.")

The hearing (will be held) (was held) at 10 this morning at the Anchorage Legislative Information Office.
