It was a mixed bag for the Kodiak Bears over the weekend. Swimmers did well at state, while the volleyball team came up game short of a birth to the championships. Here at home, a large handful of wrestlers won their classes at the Robin Hervey Tournament.

In swimming, the Kodiak girls placed second in the state swimming and diving championships Saturday at Anchorage's Bartlett High School, behind powerhouse Service High School. Laura Griffing brought back her third state title by winning the 100-meter breast stroke in 1-minute 6.57-seconds - about a second-and-a-half faster than second place. Kodiak's Myra Scholze was third, about two-seconds back. Celeste Beck-Goodell was second in the 500 freestyle and 7th in the 200 individual medley. Jori Lundquist was 4th in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, Laura Griffing was 6th in the 100 freestyle, and Sophie Hogan was 7th from the 1-meter diving board.

As a team, Kodiak was 3rd in the 400 freestyle relay, 4th in the 200 medley relay, and 5th in the 200 freestyle relay.

On the boy's side, the team was 5th overall, with Dimond winning the championship. Scott Wandersee was 2nd in 1-meter diving, Nando Macinko was 3rd in the 100 backstroke and 5th in the 50 freestyle, Austin Reed was 5th in the 200 freestyle, and Clayton Schauff was 8th in the 100 butterfly. The boys were 3rd in the 400 freestyle relay and 4th in the 200 freestyle relay.

On the volleyball court at the Northern Lights Conference championships, the Kodiak Bears were bounced by the Soldotna Stars in three games in their match for the last berth to the state championships. The Bears had beaten the Stars 3-games-to-1 in the opening round of the tournament. Soldotna will be joining Palmer and Colony in the state tourney.

At the Robin Hervey Wrestling Tournament, Elisha Fields, Chloe Ivanoff, Alex Lounsbury, Isaac Fields, Person Brodie, David Castonguay, Thomas Long and Anthony Atonio all won their respective weight classes. Teams from Palmer, Houston and North Pole were in Kodiak for the event.
