At the Kodiak City Council's
regular meeting recently Teresa Peterson spoke during public comments about the
Alaska Coastal Communities Global Climate Change Compact. The compact was drafted
last February in Homer. A number of Coastal Alaska communities in Alaska have signed it
and Peterson was hoping Kodiak would do so as well.

The compact points out the
effects of climate change on the ocean including ocean acidification. Ocean
acidification is caused by increased carbon dioxide concentrations from the
burning of fossil fuels.

stands for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Also speaking at the council
meeting was Switgard Duesterloh (Svit-kard
Duce-ter-loh), a fisheries scientist and a member of the board of the Alaska
Marine Conservation Council.
She talked about what she called,
"the gravity of ocean acidification for Kodiak."

include the City and Borough of Sitka, the City of Homer,
the City of Petersburg, the City of Gustavus, the City of Dillingham and the Kenai Peninsula Borough.

Mayor Caroline Floyd promised that the council would carefully review and
consider the compact.
