The Alaska Federation of Natives annual convention starts later this week in Anchorage, but before it kicks off, the annual Youth and Elders Conference begins Monday, presented by the First Alaskans Institute.

Kodiak has a handful of participants going, one of whom is Iver Malutin, the elders advocate for KANA. He says working on prevention is always one of the top priorities at the conference:

--          (AFN 1                        32 sec              "As you know with the ... is saving dollars.")

Malutin says this year at the Youth and Elders Conference there will be an increased effort to groom the Native leaders of tomorrow:

--          (AFN 2                        29 sec              "Alaska Native young people ... we accomplished in the past.")

Seventeen-year-old Nina (NINE-ah) Gronn is one of the youth delegates from Kodiak, and the youth representative for the Koniag Corporation. She helped plan the Youth and Elders Conference, and says in the past the convention has always been inspirational to her personally:

--          (AFN 3                        27 sec              "Well, I brought back ... it's just inspirational.")

She says preventing destructive behavior is something that was addressed in the planning process for the conference:

--          (AFN 4                        13 sec              "Well, that was brought up ... just think before you act.")

The Youth and Elders Conference is today (Monday) and tomorrow at the new Dena'ina (d'NINE-ah) Convention Center in downtown Anchorage. AFN will be Thursday through Saturday at the same place.
